Introduction:

 

the3million is the largest grassroots organisation for EU citizens in the UK, formed after the 2016 EU referendum to protect the rights of people who have made the UK their home when the country was a member state of the European Union. More information about the3million here.

We are looking for an experienced Communications Manager to work in conjunction with the CEO, the Policy and Advocacy team and the co-managers of Young Europeans Network (the3million’s youth team) to give a voice to EU citizens in the UK on multiple platforms.

This is a high-profile job at the cutting edge of British and European politics in a post-Withdrawal Agreement environment.  

 

This position is a full-time 6-month contract, with a potential to be extended depending on performances and funding. We would consider a job-share with the right candidates, if you couldn't commit to a full-time job.

The role is funded by Barrow Cadbury, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. 

Job description:

Your job is to manage and deliver the3million’s communications strategy, in conjunction with the CEO, the Policy and Advocacy team and the co-managers of the Young Europeans Network. 

 

You will be responsible for maintaining the3million’s high profile media presence, leveraging our lived experience to build impactful social media campaigns, engaging our core supporters with meaningful newsletters and building solid relationships with key communications allies, all these elements supporting the3million policy and advocacy arguments for social justice for EU citizens.

 

You will also work to promote a positive narrative on EU citizens and gather public support for our campaigns, through the promotion of lived experience stories, and with the support of the3million spokespeople network that you will manage.

Main duties and responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement the3million’s communication strategy that supports the3million’s goals, raise the profile of the3million, promote stories of lived experience and champion the issues we are campaigning on; 

  2. Develop an understanding of our key audiences, with the view of segmenting our communications work to improve impact, both from the point of view of gaining support from decision makers and influencers and growing the engagement from our base;

  3. Build the3million’s public messages, using the most effective frames to communicate complex issues clearly to targeted audiences, with lived experience underpinning these messages; 

  4. Organise our media work to convey our public messages to the right audience at the right time, and build and maintain relations with key journalists and influencers;

  5. Develop and manage the3million’s spokespeople network of volunteers, for the purpose of adding capacity to the3million in terms of public speaking or media interviews and maintaining a good engagement with volunteers;

  6. Manage our social media channels and our regular newsletter. You will coordinate with the team the delivery of clear communications in those channels;

  7. Contribute to building and maintaining content of the the3million website, in coordination with the management team;

  8. Work in collaboration with the CEO and other staff members to compile information for funder reporting and any contractual obligations;

  9. Manage the3million’s communications budget and provide a monthly communications activities report, shareable with funders;

  10. Provide assistance in other areas of the3million’s work when necessary, and as deemed necessary by the CEO.

The outcomes you will be responsible for

  1. Demonstrable experience setting and implementing strategies and plans at a
    departmental or organisational level;

  2. Experience producing budgets for projects and programmes;

  3. Forward thinking and dynamic with ability to research, design and write materials for communications and funding applications;

  4. Attention to detail and excellent written and verbal presentation skills;

  5. Experience of social media and website management, and sound understanding of social media and website analysing and reporting tools;

  6. Proven ability to write succinct, intelligent, creative copy that can be used for communications of all types;

  7. Ability to deal with the media (including issuing press releases & pitching to publications);

  8. Creative experience - working with design programmes to create visual and media content;

  9. Strong leadership skills and experience in a not for profit organisation of at least three years with a proven personal track record of delivering against set income targets;

  10. Collaboration and teamwork: proven ability to work with colleagues from a range of disciplines;

  11. Line management experience of staff and volunteers; 

  12. Ability to work well under pressure, achieve targets and meet deadlines;

  13. IT proficient (Microsoft Office or Google Business Suite, graphic and video software, Mailchimp);

  14. Flexible and adaptable to different areas of work at short notice;

  15. Ability to connect and network with a wide range of people through a broad variety of communication methods;

  16. Be committed to supporting and advancing the rights of all migrants, irrespective of nationality, immigration status, or other matters.

Person specification

  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal presentation skills;

  • Proven ability to write succinct, intelligent, creative copy that can be used for communications of all types;

  • Ability to deal with the media (issuing press releases, pitching to publications and building relationship with journalists and editors);

  • Proficiency in running social media channels, building content and scheduling posting for maximum impact; 

  • Creative experience - working with design programmes to create visual and media content;

  • Experience in website management and traffic reporting tools;

  • IT proficient (Microsoft Office or Google Business Suite, graphic and video software, Mailchimp);

  • Ability to work well under pressure, achieve targets and meet deadlines;

  • Forward thinking and dynamic with ability to research, design and write materials for communications and funding applications;

  • Collaboration and teamwork: proven ability to work with colleagues from a range of disciplines;

  • Passionate about EU citizens’ rights and committed to supporting and advancing the rights of all migrants, irrespective of nationality, immigration status, or other matters.

Working Conditions 

Reporting to the CEO 

Place of work: remote working but you will be asked to travel to the3million offices in Bristol or for team meetings in London as and when required. Some travel may be required when working with the media or when producing content for our digital platform.

Contract type: Fixed-term contract for 6 months. 

Start date: As soon as possible.

Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week) (negotiable: we would consider a job-share with the right candidates, if you couldn't commit to a full-time job).
