What are the consequences of not applying for settled or pre-settled status?

This answer presumes that you are eligible to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (see this FAQ for more information).

The deadline to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) was 30 June 2021 (unless you are applying as a joining family member, in which case your deadline is three months after arriving in the UK). Beyond your deadline, you will not have lawful residence in the UK until you submit a valid EUSS application and have received a Certificate of Application. Without lawful residence, you will face the hostile environment policies and may find it increasingly more difficult or impossible to rent a property, access work, welfare or other services.
